Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic massage technique that helps your lymphatic system move fluid more effectively. It can reduce swelling and inflammation, support immune function, and enhance your body’s natural detoxification. MLD is commonly recommended after surgery to help speed healing and decrease swelling, and it can also be part of a regular wellness routine. For those with lymphedema, MLD—and ideally Combined Decongestive Therapy—is not only recommended but truly essential for managing the condition effectively. Read my blog post for more on Manual Lymph Drainage and its benefits.
This therapy can be a game-changer if you have lymphedema, are recovering from surgery, or simply want to feel less puffy and more balanced. It's also very effective for areas of swelling after injury, where fluid buildup can slow healing or cause discomfort. MLD is also fantastic for overall wellness and immune support.
If you’re dealing with swelling, sluggishness, or just feel like your body could use a reset, MLD might be a great fit. Let’s chat about your needs to see if it’s the right choice. I offer a free phone consultation. However, you are welcome to book in and we can decide what’s best for you the day you come in.
Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is more than just a trend—it’s a well-established technique with proven benefits, especially for reducing swelling, managing lymphedema, and aiding post-surgical recovery. It’s widely recognized in medical and therapeutic communities, particularly in Europe, where it’s often prescribed by doctors. Studies have shown that MLD can help improve lymphatic flow, reduce pain, and speed up healing in certain conditions.
While some people use it for general detoxification or wellness, its strongest evidence lies in managing specific medical issues like lymphedema. If you’re curious about whether it’s right for you, let’s chat about your needs and goals! I offer a free phone consultation.
Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is a comprehensive approach used primarily for managing lymphedema, a condition characterized by swelling due to lymphatic fluid buildup. It’s considered the gold standard for treatment and includes four key components: 1) Manual Lymph Drainage, 2) Compression Therapy, 3) Exercise, 4) Education & Self-Care.
CDT is typically carried out in two phases: an intensive phase focused on reducing swelling and a maintenance phase aimed at long-term management. It's highly effective for improving quality of life, though it requires commitment to both professional treatment and ongoing self-care.
The Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton refers patients to me for MLD and CDT to help manage lymphedema, a common side effect of cancer treatment. This referral reflects my training and experience in providing safe, effective care for individuals dealing with post-treatment swelling and discomfort. I’m honored to support these patients in their recovery journey and work collaboratively with healthcare providers to ensure the best outcomes.
Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) uses very light, rhythmic pumping movements on dry skin—no oil. The pressure is gentle and works at the surface level to help lymph fluid move to reduce swelling & inflammation.
Massage therapy uses deeper pressure, oil or lotion, and longer flowing strokes to work on muscles and connective tissue. It helps relieve tension, pain, and stress.
Both feel calming, but they work on totally different systems of the body.
In short, MLD targets the lymph system, while massage targets the muscles.
